Every member pays an annual $20 "grease fee" to cover consumables such as lubricants, cleaners, cables, tubes, tires and tool wear. No one is denied for lack of money; if the grease fee is a barrier for you please speak to a mechanic about an alternative (work trade, donations, etc).
Members get access to our tools, workspace and help from mechanics during open hours. Additionally members may borrow bikes from the library for one or two weeks. We ask that all new members volunteer one shift alongside a mechanic before borrowing a bike.
New members without their own bicycle may adopt an incomplete bike or a frame from our stock of donations. They can then work to restore or complete it to rideable condition and is theirs to keep. Parts used or help from our mechanics must be paid back with work trade as below.
Donated parts will be assigned an hour value by a mechanic and members may trade volunteered hours for parts. Furthermore we ask that you volunteer your time equivalent to the time spent by a mechanic helping you with your bike. If a mechanic helps you for an hour you should volunteer for an hour.
Volunteer work at the library does not necessarily require mechanical skill or knowledge. There is work to be done in helping keeping the library open that anyone can do. We need help sorting and organizing parts and with occasional cleaning.
However if you do have experience working with bikes, you can help us by building and maintaining loaner bikes and even helping other members during busy shifts.
If you'd like to work during a shift please speak to a mechanic about what there is to do.
